Note from Coach Cuccia:

Hello Wrestlers and Parents,

October 7, 2007

Let me start by welcoming all our return wrestlers and there parents back to another season of wresting and all it encompasses. This will be my fifth year at Westlake I’m seeing an incredible growth in our program this year. We have a new group of incoming wrestlers this year of witch most are freshman. This from a coaching perspective is excellent, they seem to all be strong and excited about wrestling with a little commitment and good old fashion hard work I’m sure there wrestling experience will be a positive one.

I’d like to also welcome the new wrestler’s parents to our program. I say our program because of the unprecedented help I receive from the parents, athletes and coaches. I encourage parents that want to be part of our success to get involved as soon as possible with our booster club. We hold monthly booster meeting this is by far the best way to get hands on into the meat and potatoes of Westlake wrestling and the parents that support our team. This year all the board members have seniors on the team so when our season is over there will be positions that need to be filled. I credit a huge amount of our success and growth to our booster parent.  Booster is always in need of Moms and Dads to get involved and insure the future of this great sport at Westlake. Let me thank all that are presently involved for all you do.

This year we will be saying goodbye to Assistant Coach Gary Murphy. Coach Murphy has moved on to become the head coach at Newberry Park. Thanks coach for the three years you helped here at Westlake.

I would like to announce two new additions to our coaching staff, Adam Rundgren and Joe Cisi. Adam is a three time Marmonte league and all county champions. He was on the 2005 CIF championship team at Royal High and coached at camp of champ’s 2006 and2007.  The next addition is honor to have in our room Joe Cisi he has a black belt in Judo and was a State and National Champion from 1977 to1979. He also is a State and National Champion in freestyle and Roman Greco Wrestling from1977 thru 1980. In 1980 he qualified for the Olympic trials. I believe their backgrounds in wrestling speak for themselves and I look forward to them working with your athletes.

I would also like to welcome Coach Kevin Marshall back. Kevin is a League and City section CIF Champion from 1980 to 1982. His high school record was 72 and 4. Coach Kevin was also a 3 time European Freestyle Champion while serving in the US Military. This will be coach Marshall's third year at Westlake and I’m proud to have him back. As you can see your athletes will be coached by qualified personnel and roll models.

There are a few things I would like all our wrestlers to get involved in pre season. 1- Make sure your academics are in order so you don’t have to stress over poor grades. The lowest grade point average to participate is a 2.0 however I don’t encourage mediocrity so strive to be the best student you can. Wrestlers per capita hold a higher grade point average than any other high school sport.   2- Make sure you are eating and hydrating properly every day so your body is getting the things it need’s to function at it maximum performance. 3- Get your cardio work outs in away from school. You can start by laying out a one to three mile course starting from your front door. Run for a minimum of 30 minutes at each work out try to increase the distance you run in that time frame. It can be fun and challenging at the same time.  Your goal is to run a six minute mile. 4- Weight train as much as possible light weight lots of reps to increase speed and agility. 5-Get to bed as early as possible your body will need to recover with the training we will be doing. Eating and resting are very important in any training program. I know it may be hard to make time for training and home work, I believe that your successes will require sacrifice, which in the end makes them that much sweeter. 6-Hygien is imperative. You are responsible to keep your body clean, hair and nails cut. We want to prevent any skin infections on our mats so bath after every wrestling session. See attached instructions on proper showering tips and infection prevention.

Lastly, every Thursday at Westlake there will is Braves freestyle club wrestling from 6:00 to 8:00 it’s a great way to improve you technique and get ready for the up coming season. Always remember you will get out this sport and life exactly what you put into it. Champions train when now one is looking

Will that’s all for now, just know that the coaches and I are proud to have you involved in Westlake Wrestling lets have a great season. “Work Hard Be Smart Show Respect Go Westlake

Sincerely

Head Coach John F Cuccia.

"Most men stop when they begin to tire. Good men go until they think they are going to collapse. BUT, the VERY BEST know the mind tires before the body and push themselves further and further beyond all limits. Only when all these limits are shattered can the unattainable be reached."
